I love this world and its many creatures, including us humans. I hope that we humans can save life on the planet from certain destruction by taking measures that we know will work:
(1) Stop burning fossil fuels ASAP, switching to renewables and nuclear, and relying on clean transport and telecommuting. The best prod to action will be to phase in carbon taxes and carbon tariffs on all fossil fuels and all products made by using fossil fuels (e.g., steel made by burning coal). For example, carbon taxes will impel steel manufacturers to make steel by using far less fossil fuels and eventually none at all. Carbon tariffs will ensure that Americans do not import products made with fossil fuels.
(2) Remove carbon from the atmosphere by planting forests, parks, and gardens everywhere possible, and also by developing and using technology to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
(3) Switching from industrial agriculture to local, farm-to-market agriculture.
How that figures into the Democrats' short-term political calculations could not possibly matter less to me. But as it happens, these measures will help the Democrats enormously: the necessary work to undertake them will be monumental and create broad-based prosperity. The Fourth Industrial Revolution will create millions of good-paying jobs, new careers, new industries, and thousands of profitable businesses.
We need a political party that will champion these issues, rather than deny that any problem exists or can be solved (the GOP) or waffle this way and that and accomplish virtually nothing (our feckless Democrats).
